Aviation History

Monroe has a long and storied aviation history beginning with the birth of Delta Airlines in 1928. Located along an important Air Mail Route, Monroe's aviation scene thrived in the 1920's and 1930's. With the start of World War II, Monroe Airport became the home of the largest navigator training school in the US. Countless airman from the Second World War trained at the Monroe Airport. Following the war, famed General Claire Chennault, founder of the American Volunteer Group "Flying Tigers," retired to Monroe.
